Inspired Confusion

Reading the user manual. There are to many buttons!

A few months ago I blogged about creative exploration and how I was in a bit of a funk, that I hadn’t found a creative outlet to keep me inspired and challenged. Well, the search has ended… at least for now. I’ve borrowed a DSLR camera.

I’m totally freaked out!

It’s been rumored, rather publicly, that I don’t know an F-stop from a bus stop; I’ve got years of experience to prove it actually. But all this fear and self-doubt is nothing. I will start this adventure while on an epic road trip with David duChemin. Holy crap. Nothing quite like experimenting with a new art form in the presence of the guy who wrote the book on it (I kid, I kid… though he is currently writing part 4 of his trilogy).

The trip is 11-days in a Land Rover Defender in the wild west of America. I’m meeting David is San Francisco this morning and we’re making our way East. I’ll fly back home via Albuquerque.

When it comes to making photographs, one of my goals is to ask as few questions as possible – though I’m sure the whimpering and constant look of confusion may elicit the odd piece advice from El Visionaire. I will continue to read the user manual and I’ll likely read an ebook or two but for the most part, I’m just going to try and relax and enjoy the process.

I’m a bit worried that the only lens I have is a 10mm wide-angle. Assuming I have the guts to take someone’s portrait I’m going to have to shove my camera up their nose in order to fill the frame. Okay – so maybe I’ll scrap portraits.

Now it’s my turn to work on my craft and vision (hehe). Wish me luck. If you’re a photographer say a little prayer for me.

  • Leave it in auto and have fun, first and foremost.

  • Good luck Corwin. I empathize with you as I have not used a DSLR ever. I do have a prosumer camera for now. And the doubts just keep coming… So wishing you the best and looking forward to your progress. And there’s only one way to go – press that shutter!

  • ‘Auto’ will serve you well for the trip but I’ll pray for you guys anyway !
