Picture Perfect-ish

A phone booth on Main Street, Vancouver.

As you probably already know I have a hate-hate relationship with cameras. However I’ve promised myself that I’d take up the creative challenge of learning composition (in hopes of ignoring all things technical) with the ultimate goal of simply enjoying a new creative outlet (no  grand schemes here). Just yesterday my friend David Aiken gave me an awesome swift kick in the arse and has got me back on that photo-horse – which has been totally awesome! Anywho – I’ll likely never show any of my photograhps but I’m having a blast making them. I’ve switched from that borrowed DSLR with the 20mm lens back to my point-n-shoot because I was getting distracted and stressed out by all the knobs and buttons. The image above was taken with my iPhone on a late-night walk with Eileen. It’s been a long time since I’ve used a real phone booth; I don’t think I’ll be using this one anytime soon.

  • You’ve likely heard Chase Jarvis’ expression “The best camera is the one that’s with you.”. It’s likely more true that the best camera is the one you’ll use. Whether it’s a point and shoot or camera phone, it doesn’t matter at all, imho. You’re learning a different way to see. That’s what counts (and what will certainly inform all your other work, whether on a conscious level or not).

It would be a shame to never post your work. I’m not crazy about the idea of giving everything over to professionals. If you make an image that you like, that tells a story, that tells your story… well, it deserves to be seen.

Enough preaching for one comment, I suppose ;)
