Step Into My Office

Visiting David in Ottawa Civic Hospital in May, 2011
David and I have had a lot of meetings but this one took the cake. A couple weeks after surgery (read the nearly tragic story on his blog) he brought me out from the Westcoast to spend three days in “his office”. Well, it wasn’t so much an office as it was a busy hospital room with two other patients, and more bedpans than I could count.
He was weaning off the big drugs at that time so as his head cleared we got down to business – it was one of the most productive work sessions we’ve ever had
This guy is an entrepreneur through and through. In order to feel better he wanted to work. In order to feel like he was starting to heal he needed to work. The guy could hardly move and the simplest physical tasks took all the strength he had… but he wanted nothing more than to work and to brainstorm about future projects.
Since moving out of his apartment in Vancouver and into a ’93 Landrover Defender back in February his “office” has been a picnic table, a tent, a plane, a greasy diner, and a hospital room. His work follows him everywhere he goes because he’s his built a company that requires mobility and adventure. With rehab well underway his hope is to be on a plane to Laos, Cambodia in early September and I’m sure I speak for all his friends and fans when I say: Heal well Vision Boy!
David duChemin is one of the hardest working guys I know but his work ethic would mean squat if he wasn’t so wholeheartedly dedicated and passionate about what he’s doing. He cares about making great photographs, he’s impassioned by the plight of the amateur photographer, he loves his extended family that is his blog. In some instances I’m sure he feels his “office” is his laptop but from what I’ve seen, the real work gets done when he’s experiencing and sharing the worklife he loves.
“Go for a walk will you? I have to pee into a bottle. Give me 5-minutes, no… 10-minutes.” -David duChemin
